Kalpitiya police yesterday arrested two bandits of a three-member gang fleeing after holding up the Wayamba Development Bank branch at Palakudah, Talawila. The other member of the gang was shot dead in the shootout when he attempted to escape.
Earlier the gang, armed with two T-56 rifles had stormed the bank and made their getaway using a vehicle with a haul of cash and jewellery. Being informed of the robbery by the bank manager, Kalpitiya police had immediately set up road blocks and alerted all police stations in the area.
The police at their check point at Mamyuri flagged down the vehicle carrying the fleeing gang and arrested two gangsters with a T-56 rifle in their possession. However, the third bandit armed with the other T-56 rifle had plunged into the lagoon to escape. He had later opened fire on the policemen who were in pursuit of him. The bandit was killed when the policemen returned fire. His body and the T-56 rifle were later recovered from the lagoon.
Acting SSP Chilaw, Roshan Fernando said the cash and jewellery robbed by the gang were recovered and an inventory of the items was being taken.
Investigations are proceeding under the direction of Kalpitiya OIC, Inspector Upul Seneviratne.
