In a bid to provide quality drugs at fair prices an Independent Drug Authority (IDA) legislation will be presented to Parliament by Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva shortly.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Island the Health Ministry had recognized the importance of implementing Prof. Senaka Bibile`s National Drug Policy and added that it was with that context the Health Ministry had decided to establish IDA which would be able to save both patients and the general public from the exploitation of private sector drug importers.
Minister de Silva emphasized that around six private sector drug firms had been importing drugs in brand names and added that these firms were in the habit of selling the same drugs at exorbitant prices. He pointed out that the drug monopoly of the private sector could be eliminated by establishing a Independent Drug Authority.
He also said that the Ministry`s main objective was to safeguard the patients, general public and the public sector from unfair drug importers and to provide quality drugs to the market.
