As per the instructions issued by President Mahinda Rajapakse and according to the policies in the `Mahinda Chintana` transparency would be the key in all activities of the newly set up Ministry for Promotion of Botanical and Zoological Gardens, said Minister Bandula Basnayake.
Speaking at a media conference, at the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwela on Tuesday, he said, as the President said he too believes transparency is a vital factor in the state sector and his ministry would not work to hidden agendas.
`Minus transparency means the state sector would collapse. We are not discussing about others but we would certainly stick to it. I am a teacher by profession and I would work for the betterment of the environment and society. Certainly, this portfolio is a blessing in disguise and I would do my utmost to develop institutions that come under my purview,` he added.
Basnayake said the President`s main objective in setting the new ministry was the creating of a better human-animal friendly environment.
He said that sadly many were not aware of the importance of wildlife and environment. `Imbalance or destruction to nature could cause havoc in human lives,` he added.
The Minister had also identified three locations to set up a herpetological garden, zoological garden and a botanical garden. But added that very soon he would discuss these matters with the President and proceed with them.
Zoological Gardens Director Brigadier H.A.N.T. Perera, Botanical Gardens Director Professor Cyril Wijesundara, Ministry Secretary S. Liyanagam, Minister`s co-ordinating Secretary J.M.K.B. Jayasekera and media secretary A.A. Jinadasa also took part at the press conference.
