The JVP in a press release issued yesterday challenged UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for a public debate on the allegations made by him against the JVP which could be broadcast live over a responsible television channel. The JVP said if Mr. Wickremesinghe doesn`t have the courage to face such a debate he could name a representative of his party politburo to participate on his behalf.
The release signed by JVP Publicity Secretary and Parliamentary Group Leader Wimal Weerawansa said Mr. Wickremesinghe who has established a world record by losing 13 consecutive elections was conducting mini-seminars countrywide to ward off threats posed to his party leadership. It is reputed that at some of these seminars the party membership had asked him when he was resigning from the party leadership.
The release alleged that the only consolation for Mr. Wickremesinghe who is facing a leadership crisis is the attacks made by the LTTE against the Security Forces.
Mr. Wickremesinghe who prepared and announced the scoreboard of Security Forces killed with each LTTE attack was trying to make out that these attacks would not have taken place if he was President.
It is no secret that the LTTE continued terrorist acts within a limited area ever since the signing of the CFA.
The LTTE started killing Army and Police intelligence operatives even before the ink dried in the Ceasefire Agreement. Even politicians of Tamil parties opposing the LTTE were gunned down when Wickremesinghe was meditating on behalf of Tamil Eelam.
What the LTTE had done today was to intensify the unilateral war launched by them since the signing of the CFA. Mr. Wickremesinghe thinks that he could use this situation to criticise the JVP which was the major cause for his defeat at the Presidential election.
Although Mr. Wickremesinghe said that talks should be started with the LTTE immediately he should realise that talks stalled in 2002 when he was Prime Minister.
Mr. Wickremesinghe seemed to be blaming the JVP for everything happening in the world because it spearheaded the campaign to ensure the victory of President Rajapakse`s people-friendly policies at the recent elections.
Therefore, the JVP would request Mr. Wickremesinghe to halt his vituperation and agree to a public debate with the JVP on the allegations made by him against it.
