UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema yesterday called for an early end to the simmering leadership dispute. `This is not the time to fight among ourselves,` the outgoing Chairman said referring to a range of overwhelming problems faced by President Mahinda Rajapakse`s administration.
`...the President is not on an easy wicket and I hope our MPs understand that,` he said expressing the belief that they would be able to resolve the leadership crisis, hopefully by end of this month.
Fielding questions, he said that he tendered his resignation immediately after the presidential polls but the party wanted him to continue until a successor is found. `I am determined to get out,` he said insisting that the party should be ready for any eventuality.
The spiralling violence in the northern and eastern province and the ongoing controversy over alleged threat on Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickrematunga by President Mahinda Rajapakse were evidence that the government was struggling. He emphasised the need to get their act together now.
