Owners of 818 properties, including business premises, within the Colombo Metropolitan area are faced with losing their properties unless all overdue rates, amounting to 250 million rupees, are paid, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Jayantha Liyanage said yesterday (10).
Liyange confirmed that the Municipal Authorities had already sent the notices regarding the auctioning of these properties, to the Government Printer to publish the Gazette Notifications necessary under the Law before properties are auctioned.
He said these ratepayers had ignored the reminders for payment even after the `Red Notice` was sent to them. The Commissioner has the power under the provisions of Section 254 (a) of the Municipal Ordinance to auction properties of those who ignore the Red Notice for payment of rates.
He also said a surcharge of 10 percent will be levied for overdue payments and the council cannot be lenient on defaulters as it has to perform services to the ratepayers with its income which suffers when ratepayers default payment on a large scale.
