The UNP`s Eksath Lak Vanitha Peramuna resolved that there is no need to change the party leadership and all should rally around Ranil Wickremesinghe and strengthen his hands.
It was also agreed that Wickremesinghe is the only person able to lead party and country through the challenges and that he is the only leader acceptable to the international community, a UNP spokesman said yesterday.
`The rank and file agreed that the talk of the town was that there was a leadership dispute within the UNP, but we women feel that there is no need at all for the change,` he said.
The Eksath Lak Vanitha Peramuna meeting was chaired by its President, Mrs. Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake, MP, representing the Kurunegala district and included former ministers Mrs. Sunethra Ranasinghe and Mrs. Ranuka Herath, at UNP HQ Sirikotha yesterday.
The meeting was covered with the intention of looking into the problems faced by the membership during the presidential elections and also thank them for their active co-operation and support.
The majority was of the view that this was not what could be called a defeat for the party and all members should not get disheartened. They should get together again to face any challenge or elections in the future.
Certain women supporters of the UNP who were affected by the tsunami described how they had been given step-motherly treatment after the UNP`s defeat.
Furthermore, UNP Samurdhi recipients said that they had been politically victimised by the government for having supported the UNP.
Finally, all agreed that Ranil Wickremesinghe should remain as leader as he was the only person with a vision to develop the country.
