A schoolboy, who was claimed to have died after falling off a cliff more than three months ago, is now believed to have been sacrificed by a group of people with the intention of obtaining a treasure in Balangoda.
According to a confession made to police by one of the suspects who were arrested yesterday, the victim Prasad Madusanka had been stoned to death by the treasure hunters.
Sabaragamuwa special crimes unit Inspector Rohan Olugala said four suspects including the man practising witchcraft were arrested yesterday.
A youth who gave evidence at the inquiry into the death of the boy on September 18 had claimed the victim had fallen off a cliff while painting a scenery, but the relatives of the boy had complained to the police that they suspected foul play.
According to the confession several people in the group had hit the boy with stones, but they had failed to obtain the treasure, police said.
Police have found equipment used in the excavation to obtain the treasure and some stones believed to have been used to kill the student in the possession of one of the suspects. The suspects are to be produced before the Balangoda Magistrate today.
