Thousands of residents, including students, were ordered by the LTTE to gather at the playgrounds of the Trincomalee Sri Koneshwaram Hindu College yesterday morning to participate in the funeral of five students.
They carried placards alleging that the students were shot dead by the army on January 2, near Dockyard Road in Trincomalee.
Mobs instigated by the LTTE attacked and destroyed the army bunkers in the town, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said.
He said that the mobs had burnt five army bunkers.
He said that Army intelligence units had apprehended LTTE activists leading the mobs and urging students to provoke the troops.
Several TNA MPs had attended the funeral when the bodies of five students were displayed at Koneshwaram College grounds.
In view of the LTTE instigated mobs, additional troops were deployed and stationed around the city to face any eventuality, Brigadier Samarasinghe said.
