The Jatika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday condemned the statement made by Jaffna Bishop Rt.Rev.Dr.Thomas Soundaranayagam, who urged the international community to facilitate the granting of self governance to LTTE in the North and Eastern provinces.
JHU General Secretary, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera commenting on the statement made by Bishop Soundaranayagam said that he has no right to endorse a separate state within Sri Lanka against the Sri Lankan constitution and the prevailing law.
?The bishop`s statement promotes the LTTE`s undemocratic cause for a separate state,? he said adding that it was unethical for a religious leader to promote a terrorist group responsible for the death of many thousands of innocent civilians.
The JHU questioned whether the stand of National Catholic Bishops Council was similar to the one of Bishop Soundaranayagam and urged them to make a clear statement of their stand on LTTE terrorism.
?The bishop`s strong show of support is a strange move since he himself should be aware of the LTTE oppression of innocent Hindu, Catholic, Muslim and Buddhist civilians living in the North and East,? Ven. Sobitha Thera said.
Rt. Rev.. Dr. Thomas Soundaranayakam in his statement for the Pongu Thamil celebration held in Jaffna has called upon the international community to assist Tamils to get their self-determination without any further delay.
?Tamils waited with patience and hope after placing their trust in the ceasefire agreement and the memorandum of understanding. Time is running fast without any of their expectations fulfilled,? he had said.
He further questioned as to how the government giving up the P-TOMS for the tsunami relief could resolve the longstanding problem of the Tamil people. He said that the time had come for the Tamil people to show to the Government and the international community their plight under the LTTE.
?Enough of the waiting, let us rise up for the rights,? the pro-LTTE news site cyber news media reporting the bishop`s speech at the Pongu Thamil festival said.
