UNP leader and presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing a gathering in Badulla recently said that most of the massive development projects in post independent Sri Lanka like the Gal Oya and Mahaweli shemes were carried out under UNP regimes.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that several large scale development projects were on the cards to be implemented once he got himself elected the President. ?The post independent Sri Lanka achieved development only under United National Party governments. Since independence UNP commenced and carried out large development projects such as Gal Oya and Mahaveli Projects, distributed land among landless farmers for cultivation, established free trade zones, industrial zones and thereby enhanced the industrial sector of the country creating hundreds of thousands of job opportunities for the country`s youth.
?Our party always took steps to improve the education system. We increased the number of universities and number of Central colleges. All these were carried out under former UNP Prime Ministers such as D S Senanayake, Dudly Senanayake and Sir John Kotalawela No other government can claim to have implemented any development project that contributed towards development of the country? he said.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said ?I contest this Presidential election equipped with a realistic programme to develop our country. I have a clear vision, precise policies to address the burning issues of the country such as high cost of living, unemployment, achieving peace and development of rural economy. While other parties deceive the people with their meaningless rhetoric and promise the sun and the moon without having the least idea of how to implement them, the UNP always tells the truth under any circumstance and try to convince the nation about what is good for the country?.
Since 1956 many alliances were formed and all these alliances had only one objective he said adding that their objective was always to defeat the UNP. None of these alliances had consensus over their policies or none had a coherent programme to develop the country. ?Therefore with each alliance the economy plunged into crisis and it took another UNP government to put the economy back on track. If we let this 2005 alliance that was formed with the sole intention of defeating the UNP win, there is no doubt that they will push our country from the frying pan to the fire? he said
