Uva Province High Court Judge Sunil Gamini Perera sentenced to death Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Amarasiri for the brutal killing of his wife and sister-in-law on June 10, 1995 at Ethiliwewa in Weherayanga.
The victims were N. Badathuruge Udeshiha Sanjeewani (18) and N. Niluka Harshini (16).
The prosecution said that in addition to the wife and the sister-in-law, a 7-year-old child named Suresh Sanjeewa and a 9-year-old named Wasantha Premachandra who is a brother-in-law lived with the accused. Sanjeewa is the brother of the victim.
The two children giving evidence said while they were asleep in the middle of the night they heard ?Sister tell father that brother cut my ankle.?
Next morning one of the dead bodies was found behind the house and the other body in the compound. The accused himself had gone to the police station to lodge a complaint about the killing.
However, the then OIC of Wellawaya police IP Jayantha felt suspicious about the man and paid attention to the scratch marks found in his body. Accordingly, he was sent to the JMO for a medical examination.
Police evidence further revealed that on evidence given by the suspect, the blood stained weapon and the blood stained T-shirt worn by the suspect were found.
Former, Wellawaya JMO Dr. U.M.C. Milton and an officer from the government analyst also gave evidence.
The High Court Judge decided that the case had been proved beyond doubt and accordingly convicted the accused for double murder.
