UNP`s Kegalle District MP Mano Wijeratne yesterday presented his marriage certificate to Parliament while raising a matter of privilege over harassment caused to him at a security checkpoint in Colombo.
Wijeratne said he and his wife were subjected to undue questioning and harassment at an Air Force checkpoint at the Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha on Wednesday night.
`While we were returning from a party, security personnel at the particular checkpoint asked unwarranted questions and caused harassment. They even ignored my Parliament Identity Card,` he added. Wijeratne said one Airman had checked his wife`s National Identity Card and asked her whether he was her husband and vice versa.
He lamented this incident and explained that no one takes the marriage certificate while going to parties.
`So I brought my marriage certificate to Parliament to submit it to the House.`
The Member said he had made a complaint to Kollupitiya police.
Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Samarasinghe requested the Speaker to conduct an inquiry into this incident.
