The Jathika Hela Urumaya yesterday said they would support Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse at the next presidential election on condition that he agreed to their demands. In the event he did not agree with them, they would be forced to field their own candidate at the election, JHU sources said.
However, the JHU vowed that it would in no way support UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe as he had already issued his manifesto with which they did not agree. They said Prime Minister Rajapakse had not as yet formulated his manifesto and as such they had presented him with five demands to be included when he finally released it.
They said the the Prime Minister was trying to rally the minority parties around him but that would not be neccessary if he agreed to the JHU demands were met.
They said the support of minority parties would not be necessary as President Chandrika Kumaratunga proved at the 1999 presidential polls where she got 52 percent of the votes despite contesting alone.
They said if the JVP and the JHU joined forces to support the Prime Minister, the support of the minority parties would not be needed.
