Nearly 3,500 Lankans have AIDS - ILO
Tuesday, 5 July 2005 - 1:47 AM SL Time

The number of HIV/AIDS cases reported from Sri Lanka, by the end of 2004, was around 614. The International Labour Organisation said yesterday that the numbers could increase as these were only the official numbers.

However, persons with the disease were reluctant to come forward due to the immense changes that take place in ones appearance and the social stigma associated with it.

According to ILO and UNAIDS reports, the estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDs in Sri Lanka is around 3,500, ILO sources said yesterday. A majority of them belong to the productive section in society, such as drivers, those in the hotel trade, the army, teachers and artists. A majority of them are within the age of 30 - 39, they said.

`Even though Sri Lanka is one of the South Asian countries in which HIV/AIDS has not posed such a threat the possibilities of the disease spreading are much higher. The reluctance to use condoms, the large number of commercial intimacy workers and external and internal migration are only some of the reasons, the ILO said.

However, the ILO and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment have come up with a three-year program to control the spread of HIV/AIDS among workers. The program would introduce various programs and policies in workplaces, develop work skills, implementing awareness programs and preventing the differentiating of those who have contacted HIV/AIDS.

The final aim of this project is to develop a definite National Program to combat the disease, they stated.

The ILO urged the government, the trade unions and service providers to join hands to combat HIV/AIDS in workplaces.

That 3500 is only within the govt control areas...if the ILO do the tests in areas which is not under govt control (specifically in wanni),i m sure that they will find more than 10,000 AIDS cases...due th the gay activities of // Snap
Its 100% sure that all the dumbers who satisfy their so called dumb leaders and barbaric gay batalian also have effected with the virus...we should sympathize for them as they life expectancy is extremely low...mainly due to
1.AIDS
2.Threat of being wiped out by theSL armed forces
3.May be shot by one of their own butchrs...

Evryones like to have their own country, If tamils do not like to stay under sinhalese majority or government, they should leave to their language available country instead of killing the innocent people.
Army commados or senior members are killed, before the family could know abou the killing it is already released in their tamil news, it is the work of LTTE who kills people and blame on others. The judge gave right decisions but like cinemas those who punish you no one will like u. The people who are involved may be for money as a job. There is top leader for sure behind this like..... as we all know. Every human being life is a valuable life for his family, so don't fight for anyone except for your self.
I do not mean government is right b'cause if the proper people are getting the jobs in their proper profession SRI LANKA is not necessary to ask foreign aids for tsunami. And no killers will be available in the country to support the top VIPS (they call their self)

Kadiya,
'HIV/AIDS is better than Tamils. Eradicate Tamils before eradicating HIV.'

You are the most virulently racist Sinhala in this forum. Only an idiot of your calibre would make such a stupid statement. Have you seen anybody suffering from HIV/AIDS? You exhibit the worst basal animal instincts I have seen in a human being. I can tell you this because I came face to face with a pack of real human animals in 1977 at my door step.

There is probably one other person, to my memory, who wanted to exterminate a race, and that was Hitler. You are a brown Hitler without his intelligence or charm.

I completely concur with Piranha's view. I've been reading some posts by 'Kadiya' throughout the site and am appalled by her blatant Racism and narrow minded comments.

This discussion somehow turned into an all out racial slur war. Sad, I keep telling people (attending College in the US) that Sri Lankan's are learning to change their views, forget the past and live in harmony with each other - wishful thinking I guess.

All Sri Lankan's must unite to fight for our common goals and interests, not waste time and energy exchanging racial slurs and blaming one another for our 'common' problems.

As for the HIV spread in SL - AWARENESS! Starting from atleast 9th grade we should start teaching our children about the dangers of society. Parent's/adults must take the initiative to educate our younger generation about the dangers of such Taboo topics (I'd love to see Kadiya's response to this LOL).

The more we pretend there isn't a problem, the worse it will get.
