Parliamentary Group Leader of the JHU, Ven. Athuraliye Ratana thero said the Government must take action to arrest those who carry weapons in Trincomalee and to conduct search operations in Colombo.
There are plans to chase out Sinhala Buddhists from Trincomalee, the thero told the House yesterday.
The hartal campaign to remove the Buddha statue from Trincomalee town and the killings carried out by the LTTE in the East are aimed at ethnic cleansing, the thero said.
`We have never opposed putting up kovils in the South, but the LTTE opposes the erecting of a Buddha Statue in the Trincomalee city. The ongoing hartal is aimed at chasing the remaining Sinhala Buddhists from the East.`
`There were more than 25,000 Sinhala Buddhists in the Jaffna peninsula before 1985. But today there is none except for the members of the security forces,` he said.
The thero said the Trincomalee city was very important for the national security of the entire country.
Trincomalee District TNA MP R. Sampanthan said that Ratana thero was trying to rouse trouble by making use of incidents in the East.
Leader of the House, Maitirpala Sirisena said that the Government had taken all necessary action to strengthen security in the city.
