Fifteen anti-aircraft missiles and several uniforms were recovered from the house of an airman at Meegahawela, Nattandiya yesterday morning, police said.
On a tip off Koswatta police raided a house belonging to the airman and seized the anti-aircraft missiles of different calibres as well as several Air Force uniforms and some ammunition pouches.
The airman`s wife who was in the house at the time of the raid was taken into custody. She was later released on bail after the airman surrendered to the Koswatta police. According to police the suspect who was attached to Purigaswewa Air Force camp in Tambuttegama had stolen the missiles from his camp and taken them home. The suspect was produced before the Marawila Magistrate who remanded him. OIC Koswatta police Inspector Gunasena Haburugala is conducting investigations.
Meanwhile Chilaw police arrested a man in possession of a T-56 assault rifle. He had reportedly bought the gun from an Army deserter. The suspect was produced before the Chilaw Magistrate yesterday and remanded.
