In all the South Asian region countries there is a surge for economic growth and Sri Lanka cannot be left behind, Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama said yesterday.
Addressing a special media discussion on Sri Lanka Development Forum 2005, the forum will take place on May 16 and 17 in Kandy, he asked that if India, China and Malasiya could achieve economic growth why not Sri Lanka achieve it.
Refering to the pending development forum with aid donors, He said: ``We want it to be a fair and fruitful discussion. It is going to be absolute transparent`
In response to a question, he said that in every development forum expectations are several. ``To inform donors what happened particularly in the area of economic progress and poverty reduction. Basically to have closer a dialogue with our partners and hopeful of making use of this opportunity. This is a dialogue among friends, some of them bringing in much more money.`
Citing examples International Red Cross will be granting US$ 350 million over period of year and another Australian firm will give US$ 40 million.
He said that the Sri Lanka Development Forum will focus on the tsunami, the economy and the broader development agenda.
Section One will provide an overview of recent economic outcomes and the status of reforms, Section Two will present an analysis of the impact of the tsunami, financing needs and implementation issues for the reconstruction phase and Section Three will discuss poverty trends and priority reforms for meeting the Millennium Development Goal on poverty reduction.
Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara and World Bank, Country Director Peter Harrold also spoke.
