The UNP on Wednesday attributed the suffering of the people to the government`s concentration on its political agenda and its failure to carry out the task of governing the country.
This was revealed by Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardane during a media briefing at the office of the leader of the Opposition.
`The government is preoccupied with creating more problems than ever before. Education in popular national schools has been messed up, Sri Lanka Cricket is in tatters in order to remove the President of SLC, problems have been created at the Dalada Maligawa resulting in religious observences being cancelled, ways and means to prolong the imprisonment of S. B. Dissanayake are being explored while every attempt is being made to save Chief Minister of the WPC Reginold Cooray. This is all what the government is doing. It is not worried about the rise in the cost of living, the difficulties people are facing and the starvation experienced by some people`, he said.
`The Annual Report of the Central Bank for 2004, confirms this state of mismanagement in almost every sphere of economic development. The economic growth rate has reduced from 6.6 to 5.2, Agricultural production from 1.6 to - 0.7, industrial production from 5.5 to 5.2 and service. 9 to 7.6. The rupees had depreciated considerably inflation is on the rise and nett foreign assets are dwindling. The only plus points in the increase in the contribution of the private sector from 16.8 to 19.8.` he said.
Gunawardane added `When the former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe took charge of the government, he successfully turned the economy around in one year`s time and improved on his achievement in the second year. Today with the UPFA government preoccupied with a political agenda, its doomsday is not very far`, he concluded.
