A soldier was admitted to the Batticaloa hospital with gunshot wounds after an LTTE attack on an army post, at Mavadivembu, around 9.30 p.m. on Monday (9).
However, the LTTE cadres who launched the attack on the post had fled when the troops returned fire, a senior Army spokesman said.
The army had launched a cordon and search operation immediately following the attack and four LTTE cadres, who were within the government administered area, violating the ceasefire agreement, had been arrested and handed over to the Valachchenai police, the spokesman said.
Police were questioning the arrested cadres.
Meanwhile, police said the LTTE had held a hartal in the North and East yesterday (10) against the killing of a civilian in police fire on an unruly crowd of LTTE-backed protesters at Senthivel in Eravur on Monday (9).
Transport in the Batticaloa area had come to standstill and schools remained closed during the hartal while protest demonstrations were held in Mannar, Trincomalee with school children too taking part.
Security had been beefed up after the incidents, he said.
