With the increase of road accidents in the recent past, police have adopted a series of new measures to prevent road accidents in the future. Four teams have been mobilised to carry out cordon and search operations island-wide using modern equipment.
Police headquarters have set up an operations room for public complaints which could be reached 24 hours a day by simply dialling 118 or 119 on the phone.
DIG Gamini de Silva said since last Friday 7,444 traffic violations had been detected, mostly in the North Western, Central and North Central Provinces.
There were 4,440 incidents of speeding and the balance were other offences such as driving after consuming liquor and driving without licences.
