Bandarawela Police had taken into custody high powered explosives including live T56 ammunition hidden in Ambetota Forest Reservation in Gaswatte in Bandarawela on Saturday
The operation was carried out on a tip off received by IP R. D. M. Jayaratne attached to the Bandarawela police. Assistance of the Bomb Disposal Unit of Diyatalawa Army Camp was also sought in recovering the explosives, a police spokesperson said.
There were 250 grams of high powered explosives, iron balls, two mortar fuses, one hand grenade, a roll of wire and 12 live T-56 ammunitions.
The police suspect the cache of explosives belonged to the LTTE and further investigations are conducted under the supervision of SSP Edison Gunatilake, police spokesperson added.
