Major changes in the curricular of the GCC Ordinary Level Examination are to be from 2007 with the inclusion of several new subjects, an official said yesterday.
An Education Ministry official said candidates would have to sit ten subjects for the exam with Mathematics, English, Mother Tongue and Religion being compulsory.
He said there would be two subject baskets each consisting of four subjects and the students would be given the option to select four alternative subjects one from each basket. One basket would consist of science subjects like Chemistry, Biology and physics and the other subjects like History and Geography.
The official said that an aesthetic subject and a technical subject would have to be selected by students from another two subject baskets.
`We took this decision in a bid to bridge the knowledge gap between the O/L and A/L exams,` he said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has issued a circular to change the way of setting question papers for national exams as a measure to ease the burden on students.
According to a survey done by UNICEF among 29,000 students representing all ethnic groups, the most serious problem faced by school children was found to be the burden of exams.
Some 35 percent of AL students and 20 percent of OL students sampled had described exams as a burden on them.
