Labour Minister Athauda Seneviratne yesterday said plans were underway to increase the number of persons in foreign employment to two million in the next two years.
`The number of persons engaged in foreign employment at present is about 1.2 million. Steps have been taken to increase it up to two million within next two years. Out of this number Korea is expected to provide 50,000 jobs`, the Minister said.
Minister Seneviratne said this at a meeting held at the Foreign Employment Bureau in connection with the handing over of air tickets and visas to 157 persons leaving to Korea.
He asked this group to live and work in Korea earning foreign exchange for our country and also safeguarding our country?s dignity while respecting the rules and regulations of the Korean government. We need to set an example as youths from another seven countries were also attending this programme.
`If anyone was found fault with in foreign countries, such persons will be sent to prisons in the those countries they work.
Discussions have been conducted now with such foreign countries to punish them under Sri Lankan laws under the prisoners exchange programme.
