The visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran yesterday visited Sri Lanka`s largest Navy base at Trincomalee. A highly placed official termed the visit as unprecedented. He was hosted by Eastern Naval Commander Vice Admiral Sarath Weerasekera.
Another official revealed that the visit was arranged on India`s request. The visit comes in the backdrop of the ongoing discussions on an Indo-Lanka Defence Cooperation Agreement.
Saran who arrived here yesterday for a four-day visit said on arrival that he will review the entire range of Indo-Lanka bilateral relations with his colleagues here and plan future steps for the interaction of the two countries.
`India has an abiding interest in Sri Lanka`s security. India stands ready to assist Sri Lanka as it moves resolutely on the path towards peace and accelerated economic development while preserving and strengthening the democratic and pluralistic nature of its society,` he said.
