The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday further remanded till May 12 the Wellawaya Provincial Engineer in connection with accepting a bribe from a contractor promising to expedite payment of his dues.
Chief Magistrate Sarojini Kusala Weerawardene remanded Provincial Engineer, Kodikara Ajith Nikson Silva of Haldamulla who had accepted Rs. 6,000 promising the contractor, W.M. Muthubanda of speedy payment.
The Commission to Investigate into Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had arrested the engineer following complaint made by Wijekoon Mudiyanselage Mutubanda on April 18.
The Magistrate remanding the suspect ordered Prison Authorities to provide medical facilities if the need arose.
According to Muthubanda he was not a registered contractor. He had been under a registered contractor and got contracts. The suspect engineer had been receiving 5 percent as his commission. Though the registered contractor had paid the commission the suspect had asked for Rs. 6,000.
The Bribery Commission had arrested the suspect while he was allegedly accepting the money from the complainant at a restaurant.
Attorneys-at-Law Dulinda Weerasuriya with Sharmain Gunaratne appearing for the suspect made an application to grant bail.
Inspector Sivapada Sivasundaram appearing for the Bribery Commission producing the Director General`s certification and the money to court said that the investigations were not over and made an application to remand the suspect.
The Magistrate reserved the bail order for May 12.
