KANDY: The United National Party (UNP) imagination of one horse race for their leader under Ranil Wickremesinghe to become President is only a miscalculation because the `Sandhanaya` knows better calculations, Mahaweli Basing Development and Rajarata Development Minister, General Secretary Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena said in Kandy last Saturday (23).
Speaking at a workshop for SLFP representatives of the Kandy district branch organisations at Dharmaraja College auditorium Minister Maithripala Sirisena explatically said that the JVP-SLFP led alliance world not allow the UNP to raise its head again in Sri Lankan political arena.
Minister Sirisena reiterated that there was no rift in the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) nor would the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) desert the UPFA.
There are differences of opinion with regard to policy matters since the UPFA comprises different political groups, but that does not mean there is a worse type of crisis within the alliance, Minister Sirisena assured.
He said that Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) was a political party that could not be destroyed.
The United National Party (UNP) had been trying to destroy the SLFP at several occasions, during the past 53 years, but their vicious endeavours proved futile.
The founder leader of the party S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike was assassinated. Taking undue advantage of the 5/6 of power in parliament in 1977 the civic rights of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike were withdrawn and subsequently attempt was made on the life of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge, Sirisena recalled.
But still the SLFP goes on with the support of the people of Sri Lanka who could not forget the services rendered to them and their motherland by the party, he noted.
The SLFP is growing from strength to strength.
It will take a further step forward after the May Day. The SLFP will announce it?s plan of work on May 01 at the May Day rally, he said.
Minister Sirisena told the seminar that the party had organised a series of similar seminars throughout the country to educate the party membership on the Joint Mechanism that would be utilized to assist the tsunami affected people and the areas that are under the control of the LTTE.
He said, the proposed Joint Mechanism is solely confined to the distribution of tsunami assistance to the affected region. It is not a mechanism to delegate powers to the LTTE for administration or awarding a part of the country to the LTTE. It is not in any way equal to the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA) agreed upon by the United National Party (UNP).
President Kumaratunge as the daughter of a patriotic father and mother who did yeoman service to the country and who were loved by the people of this country will never betray the country at any lost.
President Kumaratunge will take a final decision only after reaching a consensious of all groups of the UPFA.
Deputy Ports and Aviation Minister Dilan Perera said the proposed Joint Mechanism was not a time-bomb like the ISGA. It would be limited to the distribution of tsunami assistance in the LTTE held areas.
There is no approach to the areas controlled by the LTTE, other than a structure agreed upon by the state and the LTTE who are forcible in control of that part of the country.
The proposed joint mechanism is an opportunity for an interaction between the terrorist group and the government. We should not miss this opportunity to bring together the terrorist group and the peoples government. Opportunities similar to the mechanism have been made used of in other countries to settle disputes between states and terrorist groups, he noted.
Deputy Minister Dilan Perera assured that there would be no rift in the UPFA and the JVP would not act in a manner that would be favourable to the UNP.
The JVP has not entered into any contract to safe-guard the UNP he added.
Chief Minister Central PC Sarath Ekanayake and Kandy District SLFP Chief Organiser Attorney M.P. Jayasinghe also addressed the seminar.
