'1 kasippu dens raided: Rs. 1m worth illicit liquor recovered
Thursday, 21 April 2005 - 3:00 AM SL Time

Walana-Panadura Anti Vice Squad had raided 51 kasippu dens during the past three days around the country, which the local police stations countrywide had failed to detect for a long time and recovered illicit liquor worth around Rs. one million.

The raids were done throughout the country and the breakdown is Negombo 13, Matugama 10, Buttala six, Kahawatta seven, Athurugiriya seven, Piliyandala three and Gampaha two.

Altogether 51 suspects were taken into custody and they were handed over to local police divisions to be produced before courts.

Police have recovered 100,000 drams of goda (semi brewed liquor), 800 bottles of kasippu and 200 bottles of both local arrack and beer which were sold without liquor permits.

Police also took 10 copper coils, barrels and other distilling equipment into custody from these places.

OIC Walana- Panadura Anti Vice Squad Inspector Wijitha Perera told the Daily Mirror the special series of raids were conducted soon after the Avurudhu festivities were over and when the local police stations were yet to begin their routine raids on illicit liquor breweries.

IP Perera said most of the detections were conducted on petitions received by the Anti Vice Squad by the persons who had earlier complained to local police stations about the illicit liquor menace but to no avail.

Three special teams comprising 24 investigating officers have been sent countrywide for the raids. The raids were directed by ASP Anti Vice Squad D R L Ranaweera.
