Two Puttalam District UNP MPs are on a collision course over an alleged obstruction of a photojournalist while on duty at Tabbowa recently.
Neomal Perera yesterday said that his colleague Ranga Bandara had obstructed Hiran Jayawardene from taking photographs of a building under construction at Tabbowa. According to Perera, the policeman turned politician and a few others had pounced on the journalist as he was photographing the building site from the road.
The Puttalam District Journalist Association had raised this with the UNP. Perera who is the Puttalam District Chairman, said that the association was planning to protest the MP?s action. The state-run media would take advantage of this, he said, while emphasising the media?s right to take up contentious issues.
Ranga Bandara is believed to be constructing a hotel at Tabbowa. Bandara was not available for comment. But party sources said that Neomal Perera shouldn?t have criticised a colleague publicly.
Perera accused Bandara of forcibly taking the journalist to the local police station. The journalist had been accused of entering the building site without approval.
Sirikotha sources said that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the District Chairman to inquire into the incident. Wickremesinghe wanted to know whether the MP had obtained approval from proper authorities to launch the building project.
