Twenty four government and opposition MPs have taken wing to several countries on tsunami early warning system study tours unaccompanied by a single official or expert on natural disasters, parliament sources said yesterday.
These MPs split into four groups left for Germany, Japan, Australia and Turkey on NGO- funded excursions, while a team of experts and officials sanctioned by President Chandrika Kumaratunga will be representing the country at a regional meeting later this week on establishing an early warning system.
The majority of the MPs who left over the weekend are members of the recently appointed parliament disaster select committee, while a few MPs who are reportedly not linked to the mission have also joined the foreign trip, the sources said.
Environment and Natural Resources Minister A.H.M Fowzie yesterday charged that the select committee which was set up to study the lack of national preparedness during the December 26 tsunami, had no right to go abroad and study tsunami early warning systems.
`The committee was appointed to assess the shortcomings the country faced when the tsunami struck`, he said.
The Minister said though he was the minister in charge of matters relating to natural disasters, it was disappointing that he was not consulted by the parliamentarians who went on the mission.
Meanwhile, an official Sri Lankan delegation appointed by President Kumaratunga will leave for Mauritius on Thursday to take part in an official UNESCO regional meeting on the setting up of a tsunami early warning system.
The team comprises Minister Fowzie, Science and Technology Minister Tissa Witharana, Chiefs of the Meteorological department and the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, a representative of the National Aquatic Research Agency and a Foreign Ministry official.

This may not be directly connected to the story. But look at it. How fast Chandrika has taken action to reveal aquisition of Assets worth millions earned by two school principals.
If the same yardstick is applied to her cabinet colleagues, Armed services, Police top brass, beurocrats and above all herself the answer to the abject poverty in SL will be exposed.
READ the Lead story at Daily News today. Assets worth millions acquired while in office
Interdicted principals' luxury living bared
THE Special Presidential Investigations Unit (SPIU) probing irregular Grade 1 admissions in Government schools have come across at least two instances where the interdicted school principals had acquired luxury homes, property, vehicles and businesses and were living way beyond their means.
Investigators who went into details of the assets of Ananda College Principal B. A. Abeyratne and Principal of Maliyadeva Balika College, Kurunegala K. A. Vajira Kumarihamy have determined that the value of these assets acquired by the duo by no means corresponded to their income as school principals.
Investigations reveal that the principal of Ananda College, B. A. Abeyratne interdicted last Wednesday based on a report submitted to the President by the SPIU, was the owner of a two storied house presently under construction at Isuru Uyana, Araliya Garden, in Moladanda, Kiribathkumbura Kandy.
It is alleged that he has already spent about Rs. 7.5 million on this house on a 15 perch block which he had bought for Rs. 80,000 a perch.
He is also the recipient of a Government flat at Edmonton Road and had already made the initial payment of approximately Rs. 500,000. Abeyratne assumed duties as Principal of Ananda College on January 01, 2001.
Prior to that, he had been a Sub Inspector of Police which post he resigned in 1987 to join the Education Department as a Grade 1 Principal.
In the case of the Principal of Maliyadeva Balika College, Kurunegala already under interdiction, it has been revealed that after assuming duties on January 1, 2001 she had purchased 30 acres of land in 2002 at Bauddaloka Mawatha, Kurunegala at Rs. 100,000 a perch. A two storied house at this premises is under construction and she has already spent Rs. 9 million.
In January, she opened a Tyre Sale Centre at Alawwa Junction with modern equipment. She is also the owner of two vehicles, bearing Nos 325/1189 and WP/GE 0709. RMV records reveal that Vehicle No. 325/1189 is owned by K. K. Devinda Kapugama, the Principal's son and the other is in the name of Ishani Auto Enterprises, Badurugoda Veyangoda.
She is living in a house at Narammala junction, Alawwa which belonged to her husband.

It is impossible to apply the same yard stick to the above mentioned people.
Cabinet Colleagues: They will jump to UNP and the government collapses
Army Chiefs: Will be seen as pleasing LTTE
Police Chiefs: Will be seen as pleasing Underworld.
Herself: So what's next. She is immune to law.
Beurocrats: It's human rights violation. |

How can they lower themselves to this extent? I mean they do have enough and more funds to go on trips than to take this as an opportunity to travel overseas! They have absolutely no self-respect and are willing to lower themselves to the entire world. How pathetic!

| Science and Technology Minister Tissa Witharana, Chiefs of the Meteorological department and the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, a representative of the National Aquatic Research Agency are OK and they would know what is going on. But MPs? What the heck dothey know about tsunami prevention systems? Most of them could be former thugs, sneaked into the parliament by way of exploiting and bribing the poor voter. |
