Members of the public using Dalada Veediya, the main street of Kandy, are harassed by two forces - the pavement hawkers and the police.
The vendors on the pavements, with their goods, inconvenience the public while on the other side, the police force the public onto the congested pavements.
Old and young, including feeble women, are subjected to untold suffering as a result being pushed onto the narrow pavements, in order to make more room for the motorists.
Some members of the public on Wednesday expressed the view that the pavement vendors and the police acted in combine for some unknown reason.
Kandy pavements are so narrow that the public are unable to move about and rush to the bus-stands. Missing a bus at a scheduled time means loss of much time since one cannot depend on the next.
