The Presidential Investigations Unit (PIU) has revealed that some of the admissions of children for Year 1 of Ananda College, Colombo and Kingswood College, Kandy have been carried out with fraudulently prepared documents and by violating the Education Department Circular No. 2004/18.
The parents of the children who were deprived admission due to these malpractices have complained to the President informing her that the investigations that followed revealed the allegations were true. The investigation team headed by PIU Director General A. A. Wickremasinghe has investigated each allegation separately and has recorded the statements of Principals, Deputy Principals and teachers of these schools.
PIU Director General Wickremasinghe said it is clear that Principals fraudulently admit children for the sake of earning money, but those who paid money would not accept the truth.
He said, out of 240 children who have gained admission to Ananda College, Colombo, the majority have been admitted illegally. He said the documents of certifying residence such as GS certificates and extracts of voters lists too were fraudulently prepared in many cases. Marks have been given to them knowing they were forged documents, he revealed.
In the case of Kingswood College, Kandy, the Principal has cut out 18 names duly selected by the Interview Board and has included 16 other names who have not fulfilled the necessary requirements. When questioned, the Principal has told that as he is the Principal he can admit children on his discretion. When he questioned the Deputy Principals, they said the Principal doesn`t have such a discretion.
He further said the team was able to disclose some other malpractices in several other schools too and some authorities have tried to avoid investigations with the help of some high officials.
