GOVERNMENT Spokesman and Information and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday scoffed a report in an English daily that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was intending to dissolve Parliament and go for an election.
The Minister in a media release expressed doubt whether this was an April Fool`s Day joke or a day dream of those who want to topple the Government.
The Government expected to celebrate the first anniversary of its regime on a grand scale but the tsunami made the occasion to be celebrated on a mild way confined to religious observances, the release said.
It added: `The Government took prompt action to convert the consequences of the tsunami to a national reawakening to rise from the ashes of this cataclysm. The Government`s methodical reconstruction measures in this regard were lauded by the international community.
The UNP regime during their two years of rule deprived the masses of their various concessions such as Samurdhi relief, fertiliser subsidy, employment opportunities and oppressed the masses by reducing them to utter pauperism while helping a handful of UNP stooges.
They paid exorbitant salaries to white consultants while not increasing the salaries of poor local workmen. The entire Government Service became thoroughly inefficient and ineffective due to political interference and pressure on State employees.
Wastage and corruption and disrespect of morals and discipline became the order of the day during the short period of Ranil Wickremesinghe`s leadership. The hopes of the people of both the North and East and the South were shattered one by one.
Only the LTTE`s wishes were fulfilled day by day with the blessings of the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The United People`s Freedom Alliance was formed and the new Government came into power when the country was going through such tragic circumstances. During the past one year of rule, the UPFA Government has achieved historical successes by fulfilling public aspirations.
It has provided employment to 41,000 unemployed graduates. It has increased the salaries of Government servants and pensioners. It has reintroduced Samurdhi benefits and fertiliser subsidy and launched numerous development projects such as maga neguma and 1000 irrigational tanks restoration to uplift the rural masses.
Its strategy on the reconstruction programs following the tsunami is acknowledged as praiseworthy both by local elite and international dignitaries. Surveys by various voluntary organisations disclosed that the Government is on the correct track of development envisaging a promising future.
The National Token Award Festival based on a recent survey conducted by the SLIM recognised President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga as the first among politicians to understand the indigenous aspirations while Ranil Wickremesinghe was fifth in the list.
These are among the many factors to acknowledge the UPFA as a regime capable of adopting people friendly policies while preserving the dignity of personality of its members. The strength of its unity will grow day by day.
In spite of constructive dialogue among the members and in the face of UNP dreams to disarray the unity of the UPFA and topple the Government, this Government will never be dissolved until all the people`s aspirations are fulfilled.`
