A UNP Parliamentarian said the UPFA is divided into two groups and Minister Lakshman Kadirgamer is trying to get the Prime Ministerial post which he lost, being a mouth-peace of the JVP and Minister Anura Bandaranailke was trying to be the presidential candidate with the help of the JVP.
Mr. Bandula Gunawardene addressing a press conference at the Opposition Leaders` office yesterday said the country was going through a very difficult period when the UNP came to power, all the economical nerve centres such as Airport, Central Bank, Kolonnawa Oil tanks was bombed, and there was 40% surcharge on all the airlines and the ships calling Colombo, the investments were stopped, tourists never arrived, but with the signing of the Ceasefire Agreement by the then Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe changed everything.
The JVP was driving the country towards war and creating war mania by making statements against the peace process and receiving aid to the country.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga is responsible for dismantling the Bribery or Corruption Commission and she cannot pass this to anyone else by blaming the UNP, Assistant Seretary, UNP, Tissa Attanayake said.
Mr. Attanayake addressing said the president was making allegations against the UNP for crippling the Bribery or Corruption Commission while all powers were vested on her to make the appointments to the vacant positions of the Commission. The Constitution Council had nominated three names including former IGP, T. E. Anandarajah.
If Mr. Anandarajah was connected to underworld, then she has two more names to be selected, one among them other than blaming UNP unnecessarily, as the UNP is not in office anymore.
President was the one who appointed Anandarajah as IGP and not the UNP, the majority of the Constitution Council is held by the UPFA as there was Prime Minister, President`s representative and so on.
We have only the Opposition Leader. She has forgotten that the UNP has nothing to do with the appointing of a Commissioner to the Bribery Commission. She was jabbering words to get political mileage, he said.
The PA always crippled the Bribery or Corruption Commission when they were in power, but the UNP gave unconditional support to pass the Bribery Commission in 1994 and always acted to strengthen the democracy, but the PA and the UPFA wanted it to be dismantled for their political gain, Mr. Attanayake charged.
