Despite assurances that universities will not be privatised, JVP student unions will stage demonstrations today at several universities against the proposed reforms in the education sector.
Inter University Students` FederationConvenor Duminda Nagamuwa said they would picket during the lunch hour at Colombo, Wayamba and Rajarata universities today while there would be demonstrations in other universities tomorrow.
He said they would resort to tougher action next week if the government failed to halt the implementation of proposed reforms including the setting up of private medical colleges and giving degree awarding status to private institutes.
Commenting on the situation, Deputy Higher Education Minister Dinesh Gunewardena said university education would not be privatized.
He said there would be no difficulty in ironing out difference between the government and the JVP on these issues.
