S. B. Dissanayake has scotched speculation that he was being approached by the government to organise a planned defection of a group of UNP MPs in return for a presidential pardon, an aide said, reacting to a news report to that effect.
Dissanayake, representing the Nuwara Eliya district is serving a two-year term for contempt of court.
`Amathithuma assured me there is no basis for this,` an aide told the Sunday Island, adding, `He wouldn?t accept a back door deal and engage in an exercise to prop up the Kumaratunga government.`
Dissanayake is warded at Merchant?s Ward of the Colombo National Hospital. The source said that he asked Dissanayake about the report on Friday.
Dissanayake had also assured the UNP that he would remain with the party whatever the consequences. He had also claimed that he hadn?t been approached by the government to work out what the source said was a mutually beneficial deal. (SF)
