The principal of the Pannala National School was arrested yesterday by the Presidential Investigation Unit on charges of obtaining cash bribes from parents to admit their children to Grade 1 classes.
PIU Director A.A.Wickramasinghe said his team acted on a complaint received from a parent who had been allegedly asked by the principal to either make a payment of Rs. 3,000 or clean the school land if his child was to be admitted. He said that after the complaint was received on March 2. PIU detectives went to the schoo posing as parents.
He said the detectives had found that though the closing date for the Grade 1 admission was February 27, five vacancies in each of the five Grade 1 classes had not been filled and were apparently kept open for dubious reasons.
He said the team had found evidence that the principal had appointed a special team to collect money from parents.
