Improper teacher transfers in the Western Province have caused an English teacher shortage in the Matugama area.
The convenor of the Education Employees` Trade Union Alliance, Bertie Ranaweerage told the Daily Mirror yesterday that some schools in the Matugama Education Zone do not have English teachers, while some other schools in the Gampaha district were overcrowded with teachers.
`There is a school in Gampaha, which has 18 English teachers. But, in Matugama, one English teacher has been assigned for two schools in some instances.
We want at least 30 more English teachers for Matugama,` he said.
He said that English teachers had sometime been assigned to take over primary classes at several schools in Gampaha. `There are no English teachers at some schools. In such a situation, English teachers were teaching for the primary classes.
This is due to the irregular transfer policies of the Provincial Council,` he charged.
