Posts and Telecommunications Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardana said that the authorities will take tough action against postal workers who participated in the recent sick leave campaign.
He said the workers have a right to hold a protest or any other agitation campaign for their employment rights, but they had no right to work in contravention of government regulations. `Some sub post msters closed their offices on that day. It is totally against the Postal Department regulations to close sub post offices on any working day. We have already issued a circular asking those employees to present medical certificates about their illness on that day. They have asked us to withdraw the circular, but we will not withdraw it,` Abeygunawardana said.
Minister of the Posts and Telecommunications D. M. Jayarathna said he agreed that the salaries of the government employees were not sufficient. Salary anomalies were found in the all the sections of government institutions.
`We are going to rectify those anomalies. We have presented a cabinet paper to solve the problems of postal workers recently. There are some strikes in the government and private sectors in the county. Postal workers are also following that trenad, so there is nothing we can do about it,` Minister Jayarathna said.
He also asked how around 657 workers got sick at the same time and on the same day. `It was because of that we asked them to furnish medical reports about their illness`, he said.
