The disappearance of democracy is not a phenomenon that occurs suddenly, but a climax of a gradual process. Incarcerating S. B. Dissanayake marks the beginning, a UNP spokesman said. Prof. G. L. Peiris further said on the launching ceremony of a website for S. B. Dissanayake:
`Next comes preventing tsunami affected people from building their houses by imposing a 100-metre buffer zone. The incident of firing live bullets at University students under the cover of the emergency powers is the latest development in this gradual process, .
`SB is sentenced to hard labour for two years for the alleged misuse of a word. He was asked to recall his relevant speech sentence by sentence. Can we politicians remember a speech we made five months ago sentence by sentence? We make about five to ten speeches a day, said Prof. Peiris at the launching ceremony of the website for S. B. Dissanayake.
S. B. Dissanayake is not the first and the last person, who was convicted for the contempt of court. Former SLFP Minister Dharmasiri Senanayake was convicted but not like this. Dr. S. A. Wickremesinghe was sentenced to two weeks in jail and in India Arundathi Roy was sentenced to only 24 hours simple imprisonment, but S. B. Dissanayake was to two years rigorous imprisonment for making a political statement, he said.
`SB does not ask President to grant him a pardon, but if the president could start negotiations with the LTTE who attempted to kill her, and join hands with the killers of her husband, why can`t she grant pardon to Mr. Dissanayake who brought her to the positions of a Chief Minister, Prime Minister and the Executive President, asked Mr. Wijesekara.
The wish of SB was that UNP should come into power to set him free. He wants to ask for pardon from Ranil Wickremesinghe when he becomes the President, he said. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said all the national figures such as Dr. S. A. Wickremesinghe, Sir Francis Molamure, D. S. Senanayake, N. M. Perera, Philip Gunawardane added colours to their career by serving jail terms. The jail term SB is serving would similarly add colour and strength to his political career.
SB is in jail because of the party. Therefore, its our responsibility to set him free. We should free him before he serves the entire term by forming a UNP government and electing Ranil Wickremesinghe President of this country.
UNP Deputy Leader, Karu Jayasuriya said SB crossed over to the UNP to save the country from the disaster it was heading for.
The people today could not bear the high cost of living, and the security of the country is at stake. The farmers were facing difficulties. The UNP rebuilt the country to a grate extent, But the UPFA has ruined the country in less than one year, said Mr. Jayasuriya. The UPFA toppled the UNF government saying that the national security was under threat, because of the Manirasakulam camp. But how many camps are there today? How many LTTE courts and police stations are functioning there today? What about providing helicopters to the LTTE? How many people in the North-East were killed after the UPFA assuming office, asked Mr. Jayasuriya.
We will restore democracy in the country and allow people to enjoy the freedom, he said.
www.sbdissanayake.com website was launched by the family members of the political prisoner, S. B. Dissanayake to mark the completion of 100 days in prison for political reasons. Tamara Dissanayake, the wife of S. B. Dissanayake said that her husband completed 100 days in prison on March 17. He is an inmate of the Welikada Prison for a political statement made.
`The website was launched at the Trans Asia Hotel on Thursday to keep all informed about his position. All members of our family deeply appreciate the yeomen service done by everyone for the well being of my husband,` Mrs. Dissanayake said.
