The Sri Lanka Freedom Party Lawyers Association, Galle branch, unanimously passed a resolution condemning the recent statement made by President Chandrika Kumaratunga, at Attangalla, which sought to send away the coalition partners of the UPFA or to get rid of them.
The meeting had been convened at the request of the members by the president of the association Sarath Lewke Bandara PC
Attorney Srimal Wijesekara, addressing the meeting said the people had given a mandate at the last election to implement the ?country forward? policies of the UPFA which comprised the SLFP, the JVP and other political parties but it was not a mandate given to President Kumaratunga.
President Kumaratunga had no right to put aside the people?s mandate in agreeing to an ISGA for the North and East, but she had a right to seek a solution to the problem by devolution of power to those provinces as stated in the manifesto of the UPFA, Wijesekara said.
If the government does not pay heed to the pledge made to the people at the last general election the Association will start a campaign to educate the people about the dangers and other democratic methods of dissuading the government from disregarding the mandate of the people, he said.
