JVP won`t go, but UNPers coming - DM
Saturday, 26 February 2005 - 1:11 AM SL Time

The United People`s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is fully confident that it`s coalition partner the Janatha Vimuthi Peramuna (JVP) will not pull out of the government and it is also certain that a number of UNPers are waiting to join the government, Senior Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) politician D. M. Jayaratne said yesterday.

Jayaratne told The Island: `The Alliance government will rule the country till it`s six-year term ends. There is no question about it. Though the JVP`s opinion differs from that of our`s on the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA), we are not necessarily going to have talks based on ISGA alone; there are various other ways to deal with this matter. I am confident that the JVP will understand it.`.

He said `in fact, they also believe that peace talks are a must for a democratic country like ours.`

He said that the `red boys` are sensitive lot and they want to show the world that they are always with the public.

`That is politics in Sri Lanka. That may be the reason they always stick to their agreement, he added.`

Jayatane, who is also the Posts, Telecommunications and Udarata Development Minister said that many members of the United National Party (UNP) were keen to work with them with regard to the peace talks.

He also said that 17 UNP parliamentarians had expressed their willingness to cross over to the government.
