Opposition Whip Mahinda Samarasinghe yesterday denied reports that he would be accepting the media ministry portfolio offered by the government and assured he would never leave the UNP.
Raising a privilege question in parliament yesterday, Mr. Samarasinghe said the news report which appeared in yesterday`s `Thinakkural` had falsely claimed that he was to be sworn in as the media minister.
`I want to state on the floor that the news report is completely false and baseless. I never received such an offer from the government nor did the thought ever enter my mind`, he said.
`Some people think that my appointment as chairman of the parliamentary select committee on Natural Disasters was a prelude to a post in the government. They thought I would crossover. But that will not happen`, he said.
`I want to create a new political culture. I always wanted it. But Mr. Speaker, we must find out who was behind this report. I have completed 18 years in the UNP, and now occupy a senior position in the party. I have no intention of leaving it`, he said.
