Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, MP, accused the government of playing local politics with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan?s recent comments on the killing of several LTTE cadres including their Ampara-Batticaloa LTTE political leader Kaushalyan.
If the government wasn?t happy with Annan?s stand it should be taken up through proper channels, he said, dismissing JVP-led protests as propaganda. The MP said that there was no point in the JVP protesting the UN chief?s statement as the Sandhanaya leader President Kumaratunga was silent on the issue.
He acknowledged that he didn?t see any fault on the part of the Un Secretary General. `The Secretary General regularly comments on contentious issues. If our government doesn?t agree with his comments, it should be taken up without organizing ridiculous protests. JVPers and their front organizations are acting like clowns.`
