The Department of Motor Traffic is planning to set up electronic data processing centres in five districts for processing driving licence applications.
Commissioner of Motor Traffic B. Wijeratne said that the data centres will be established at the department regional offices at Galle, Gampaha, Kandy, Kalutara, and Kurunegala districts, from where the department used to receive most number of applications.
Driving license applications are generally submitted to the divisional secretariat to which the applicant belongs to and then send to the department head office at Narahenpita for processing.
However this procedure usually takes months due to the work load in the head office in Narahenpita, Colombo.
Wijeratne said that at the first phase, the centres will accept data and in the second phase the photograph of the applicant will be electronically captured to further expedite the processes.
