Tikiri Kobbekaduwa the former Sylvestrian opening batsman assumed duties as the Governor of the Centrol Province at a ceremony held at the Governor`s residence in Kandy before a large and representative crowd.Tikiri Kobbekaduwa was an elegant batsman who had the staying powers to accumulate runs with grace and elegance.
He represented his school in the eighties and among his top scores was a brilliant century in the annual big match against Vidyartha College.On leaving school he took up employment with Lever Brothers Limited and continued with his cricket in the Mercantile services tournament.
He entered politics contesting the electorate of Yatinuwara but was unsuccessful on three occasions. He was attached to Lake House as its Chief Executive Officer before taking up the position as the Chairman of Tea Small Holdings.
He is perhaps the fist cricketer to assume duties as Governor of the Central Province and it is expected that sports in the Province could look forward to his support.
