Hours after former captain Sanath Jayasuriya was picked to play the four-match ODI series in New Zealand, a mysterious media release came out from Sri Lanka Cricket suggesting that although the player was picked he`s yet to gain full fitness. The media release not signed by chairman of selectors Lalith Kaluperuma or any other selector provided a distorted version of the injury in an attempt to mislead the public.
Previously, Sri Lanka Cricket`s version of Jayasuriya`s injury had varied day after day and the latest release suggested that despite his inclusion in the squad he may still struggle in New Zealand.
`An independent opinion was sought from Dr. Phaneesh at Apollo hospitals whilst Sanath was undergoing treatment where the said Specialist states that he should not bowl for three weeks but he may bat,` the release from Sri Lanka Cricket stated.
However, the particular statement by the doctor had been issued to Sri Lanka Cricket three weeks ago and when `The Island` contacted Dr. Phaneesh at the Apollo Hospital he expressed his surprise that what he had issued three weeks ago was inserted in a release that was issued on Thursday.
The release didn`t mention that Dr. Phaneesh`s assessment was three weeks old.
`That was my opinion three weeks back and Sanath has made considerable progress and I am surprised that the medical advise I provided sometime back has been used now,` he told `The Island`.
`He has full range of painless movement now and he`s fit to field, bowl and bat in matches now,` the doctor further said.
Jayasuriya, in fact, has started bowling in the nets and has been making gradual progress.
Dr. Phaneesh from India also said that he`s intending to write to Sri Lanka Cricket on the matter expressing his disappointment.
In the domestic one-day competition Jayasuriya has been in decent form hitting a hundred and two fifties in two weeks helping his club Bloomfield to qualify for the semi-finals of the domestic competition.
Earlier, President Mahinda Rajapakse too had called for an independent inquiry asking as to why Jayasuriya was left out of the Test series in India.
