Five persons who were convicted in the Walapane murder case were sentenced to death by the Kandy High Court. On December 10, 1998 during a religious ceremony the accused forcibly entered a house in Walapane at Kumbukwala and killed nine persons known to be supporters of the UNP by chopping and shooting them.
In this case the Attorney General indicted fifteen suspects on twenty nine charges and while ten of them were acquitted five of the accused were found to be guilty of the charges.
R.H. Athula Bandara Wickremasinghe, M.G. Davith, W.M. Wijesekera, B.M. Thilak Basnayake and R.M. Sudubanda from Walapane were sentenced to death by Kandy high Court Judge D.S.C. Kelamwasam in the case which was heard without a jury.
State counsel M. Liyanage prosecuted while counsels Wijeya Wickremaratne and Daya Perera appeared for the defence.
