Several state institutions, the armed forces and even prisoners will work together on a project aimed at creating a cleaner living environment for people residing in the low lying areas and along the canals banks of Colombo.
A spokesman for the project said state agencies such as the Presidential Disaster Management Authority, Land Reclamation and Land Development Board, Urban Development Ministry, Environment Ministry the security forces personnel of the Army Navy and Air Force the Prisons Department have all got together to implement this project.
`We got the Colombo Muncipality involved through the Mayor Prasanna Gunawardena. Prison Chief Rumy Marzook also deploved some prisoners to assist the community assisted project.We have to do the CMCs job and remove tons of stinking garbage lying along canal banks of Colombo.`
He said they hoped to improve public utilities as toilets and clean tap water where needed.
The first meeting of all the state Agencies will be held at Land Reclamation and Land Development Board Auditorium at Rajagiriya at 2 p.m. today.
President Mahinda Rajapakse has initially set aside 500 million rupees, from the budget, to construct 60,000 houses for the poor in Colombo and he has directed that a separate authority be set up to implement this project without any further delay.
