Last week, there had been a serious political fallout between the chief of the LTTE`s political division, Tamilchelvam, who is based in the Vanni and Prabhakaran`s chief speech writer and LTTE theoretician Anton Balasingham, who is based in London.
The reason for the fall out was Balasingham`s hero`s day speech in London last Sunday. In it, Balasingham suggested to LTTE supporters in London that during the peace talks held in Bangkok, between the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka in 2002, only he and Prof G L Peiris were talking peace, while the others in the delegation had visited the red light district in Bangkok, which has a vibrant intimacy industry.
While Balasingham and his Australian wife travelled to Thailand from London, Tamilchelvam travelled to Thailand from the Vanni with Col Karuna, whom the LTTE have already branded as a womaniser.
Last week Thamilchelvam had taken exception to Balasingham`s suggestion that among others, he had enjoyed the young ladies of Bangkok.
During a heated argument via satellite telephone from the Vanni, Thamilselvam has threatened to cut Balasingham`s neck if he visits the Vanni. Balasingham, who is known to be well acquainted with the finer words of the Tamil language had responded in kind.
Balasingham has come under serious criticism from the Tamil Diaspora as well as Tamils in Sri Lanka for his hero`s day speech. Prabhakaran`s speech has also been criticised by Tamils for various reasons. The anti-LTTE Tamil groups in Europe are using the speech to discredit the LTTE. TBC Radio in London had a 3-hour phone-in radio program last Thursday with Tamils from all over Europe phoning in and criticising Balasingham for his speech. LTTE support in London has been steadily declining over the last few years.
The LTTE can now only muster about 5,000 Tamils in the UK, out of a total Tamil population of over 150,000.
The group is known to have been ruthless in the past with its cadres who have had loose morals. Sex out of wedlock has been used in the past as a reason for execution of its caders. In Jaffna, the LTTE has violently dealt with those who had been involved with the intimacy industry, pornographic films etc. Under the circumstances, Balasinghams allegation that other than him, all the others in the LTTE delegation enjoyed the girls of Bangkok is regarded as being significant.
Two other prominent figures of the LTTE delegation to Thailand are Visuvadevan Rudrakumaran, the LTTE`s lawyer from New York and Jay Maheswaran, head of the TRO from Australia.
